MONTGOMERY, Ala. (AP) — Alabama Governor Kay Ivey passed a sweeping bill Friday that bans gender-affirming medication for transgender youth and includes criminal penalties for doctors who prescribe it.

Ivey also signed a law banning students from using school bathrooms that are not gender-appropriate at birth.

Ivey signed the bills a day after the House and Senate passed both measures.
