For a quieter day out, there’s Back Beach (aka River Beach), plus the more secluded but equally red Ness Cove Beach, tucked away next to the village next door shaldon and only a seven minute drive from Teignmouth. The work is on the banks of the River Teign and mixed with Teignmouth harbour, so you will often see working fishing boats and fishermen going about their day.

Water sports fans, meanwhile, will be happy to hear that you can do everything from kayaking or paddle boarding to jet skiing thanks to SeaSports Southwest, with sailing another popular activity. Sailing fans who have seen The Mercy starring Colin Firth and Rachel Weisz will remember Teignmouth well.

The 2017 British biographical film tells the true story of Donald Crowhurst, a native who tried to circumnavigate the globe as part of the Golden Globe race, but never returned; his ship, the Teignmouth Electron, was found afloat and abandoned. Those interested in learning more about the area’s interesting history can also visit the Teignmouth & Shaldon Museum, which, according to Tripadvisor reviewers, is the coastal town’s best attraction after the Teignmouth to Dawlish Railway Walk.

There are also plenty of delicious places to eat in Teignmouth, including the gleefully named Jolly good fish cafe. Crowned the number one place for fish and chips in the UK by Tripadvisor users in 2018, you can expect gigantic portions, delicious food and friendly staff.

There is also Finley Brown’s Cafewith 532 excellent reviews and the title of top-rated eatery in the area according to Tripadvisor reviewers, and The blue cabin† The former is dog-friendly and award-winning, serving everything from decadent hot chocolate, milkshakes and a classic English breakfast.

Past visitors have loved the friendly, attentive staff and the alternative options available for those on special diets, including vegan and dairy-free. Alternatively, The Blue Hut is a charming spot right on the River Teign, where waterfront seating and views are combined with delicious food such as Cajun chicken wraps and halloumi fries. It is currently closed, but will reopen in April 2022.

Getting to Teignmouth from London is quick and easy as you can get on a direct train from Paddington station or get there with just one transfer. The fastest train takes you there in just two hours and 32 minutes.
