City EDS in hands of Liverpool in goalless duel with Etihad

Manchester City’s Elite Development Squad were held to a 0-0 draw at the Etihad Stadium in Premier League 2.

Despite having more chances throughout the game, especially in the second half, Brian Barry-Murphy’s side were unable to break down a stubborn Liverpool defence.

The result leaves City eight points clear of the Premier League 2 leaders and extends our unbeaten run to nine games.

City’s EDS initially struggled to find our rhythm, with the Liverpool high press keeping us in our own half.

The visitors had the ball in the net within the first ten minutes, only for the linesman’s flag to disallow Max Woltman’s attack, before James McAtee went down in the penalty area on the other side, only to referee Daniel Middleton to book the City midfielder.

We had to overcome a period of pressure from the visitors, with keeper Mikki calling on van Sas to save two goals from Woltman and winger Jack Bearne.

But City, who looked dangerous on the counter-attack all along, came closest to opening the score, with great play from Liam Delap and McAtee putting Sam Edozie in Oscar Kelly’s path before Liverpool’s stopper the winger’s effort.

And at the end of the half we started to get our pass, as good play from Oscar Bobb in Kwaku Oduroh played to send the ball fizzing across the penalty area to Liam Delap, but the striker was unable to make contact on the cross as the scores remain goalless at halftime.

In the second period, City stayed on the front foot and almost got our breakthrough when James McAtee’s low free kick had to be knocked out by Kelly.

As we went into the final 20 minutes we had a golden opportunity to take the opener, with a maze in the penalty area and saw Delap and Edozie getting close to the ball at the same time, with the end result seeing the ball fly over the bar.

City remained the dominant force for the rest of the half, but we could have taken to death when the ball was squared within the area to Liverpool’s Dominic Corness, only for the substitute to poke the ball wide of the goal, when the match ended aimlessly.

Mikki van Sas got the nod to the goalkeeper at the Etihad Stadium, with a backline of Kwaku Oduroh, CJ Egan-Riley, Luke Mbete and Tomas Galvez protecting him.

Romeo Lavia returned to the side, returning to the defensive role in midfield alongside Darko Gyabi.

Barry-Murphy was then able to select an attacking midfield trio of Oscar Bobb and Sam Edozie alongside James McAtee, with Liam Delap taking on the duties of the central striker.

CITY Base XI: van Sas, Oduroh, Egan-Riley (C), Mbete, Galvez, Lavia, Bobb, Gyabi, Delap, McAtee, Edozie

LIVERPOOL Start XI: Kelly, Bradley, Norris, Williams, Koumetio, Clarkson, Bearne, Morton, Woltman, Clayton (C), Balagizi

The draw will increase our lead at the top of the Premier League 2 to eight points over West Ham.

But while there are only three games left in the campaign for the EDS, West Ham still have five to go, which could help them narrow the current deficit.

After the international break, the EDS returns to action in a crucial away game against Arsenal in third place.

Kick-off in London is on Monday, April 4 at 7:00 PM (GMT).
