The United States men’s national team is expected to officially qualify for the 2022 World Cup in Qatar on Wednesday evening, when they play their final qualifier in Costa Rica. Gregg Berhalter’s team has had a strong march, leveling in Mexico and beating Panama at home to put themselves in this position. Only a huge disaster — the USMNT would have to lose six goals or more to fail to qualify — against Costa Rica will see the Americans crash.

Here are storylines for the USMNT’s final qualifier, how to watch the match, and more:

How to look and opportunities

  • Date: Wednesday 30 March | Time: 21:05 ET
  • Place: National Stadium — San Jose, Costa Rica
  • TV: CBS Sports Network live stream: Paramount+
  • Opportunities: Costa Rica +245; pull +200; US +117 (via Caesars Sportsbook)

Costa Rica: Los Ticos are in an interesting position. They will believe they can beat the US by six goals, but let’s be realistic. Expect a cautious approach, especially with so many guys who have a booking away from missing their potential play-off. They will definitely let some key players rest and see this more as preparation for their play-offs than anything else.

UNITED STATES: Expect a lot of rotation here and a lineup similar to what we saw against Mexico. The US is in a comfortable position where even a performance like that in Trinidad in 2017, when they infamously choked out World Cup qualifiers on the final day, would suffice. The only way the US will get into the intercontinental play-off and not directly into the World Cup is with a six-goal loss. Yes, that seems unlikely. Expect an emphasis on defense, a rough game with lots of fouls and for the Americans to go on the counter.

A draw is the result here, as neither team is much at risk, with Los Ticos looking to avoid too many bookings ahead of the intercontinental play-off. Choose: US 1, Costa Rica 1
