‘Despicable’ thieves steal Honda from Birmingham driveway, but are thwarted by stealth security

Bestinau got that-

A gang of four thieves struck Birmingham and stole a high-performance car from a driveway. But the owner had the last laugh when the vehicle’s stealth protection kicked in and brought them to a stop.

The theft occurred at an address off Walmley Ash Road in Sutton Coldfield in the early hours of April 1, when four hooded car criminals wearing balaclavas used a relay device to steal a high-quality Honda from a driveway. But unbeknownst to them, the owner had put in extra security that watched and tracked the car and also had an anti-hijack function, meaning they didn’t get very far.

The owner, who declined to be named, admitted he had been careless in not locking the car or installing a steering wheel lock, which he owned. But was grateful that he took extra steps to regain his ‘pride and joy’.

The 52-year-old said: “I want to emphasize this and warn other drivers. I went to Asda, about a mile away, last Thursday (March 31) and came back and didn’t lock the car because I was distracted by my wife and kids.

“By not locking it, I didn’t activate the alarm and immobilizer. I also have a Disklok steering lock and that was also in the footwell.

“Four hooded men, balaclavas and gloved men presented themselves at my property at 12:30 pm on April 1, amplifying my fob’s signal. And within 30 seconds the car was gone. A relay theft, aided and abetted by me. Much carelessness on my part has made their task easier.”

The car owner said he was asleep at the time and noticed the car was gone the next morning. He said: “I woke up in the morning and was in the driveway and something clicked that something wasn’t right and the car wasn’t there.

“But with the extra security, I could see that the car was less than a kilometer away. I also had them on video while they were stealing the car.

“Where the car was eventually left, when going into shadow security, it was off Kingsbury Road near the Castle Vale estate, about 30 seconds away.”

He continued: “I drove around and on the way called the police and told them everything that had happened. When I arrived they said there is no support and no units are available. Would you like to pick up the car yourself? Which I did around 11am.

“I couldn’t get the driver’s side into the car, meaning the driver was short or the seat was pulled forward for some other reason. The car was not damaged.

“But I punched myself. Make sure your car is locked and extra security is in place and working. And put your keys in a Faraday bag. You should use security. I was complacent, but I was smart enough to take extra The extra £1,000 security paid for itself Two days later, West Midlands Police closed the case.

“I have some cameras and footage, but they don’t have fingerprints or DNA. We also think a spotter came my way and saw the car.”
