Elderly woman killed in carjacking in Mid-City after being dragged several streets, police say | Crime/Police

An elderly woman has died after being dragged by a moving vehicle during a carjacking in Mid-City Monday afternoon, police and witnesses said.

The New Orleans Police Department reported that the woman was found dead on Bienville Street around 1:30 p.m.

Four carjackers dragged the woman several blocks through Bienville, from North Scott Street to North Pierce Street, NOPD Superintendent Shaun Ferguson said.

A witness who saw the carjacking said the woman was hanging several blocks from an open car door. Ferguson said her arm was severed.

The witness, who asked not to use his name, said he was “numb and angry” after witnessing the crime.

Police are looking for the four carjackers, whose gender and other identifying details were unknown. They drove off in the woman’s gray Nissan Kicks, Ferguson said.

Austin Northcutt, who lives on Bienville Street, said he was studying when he heard screams and went outside to see what happened.

“A lady tried to put something in her vehicle. A man jumped up and kicked her out,” Northcutt said.

Northcutt said he saw the woman get caught in the wheel arch of the moving car and get dragged.

“You don’t know what to feel. You’re in shock. It’s hard to see,” he said.
