Bestinau got that-
What if…? is one of several MCU shows set to premiere on Disney+ in 2021. Based on the Marvel Comics series of the same name, this animated anthology looks at alternate timelines across the multiverse that would take place if specific moments in the MCU happened differently.
In addition to introducing Jeffrey Wright as The Watcher, this series sees many actors from the MCU reprise their respective roles, including: Samuel L. Jackson† Mark Ruffel, Natalie Portman† Benedict Cumberbatch† Hayley Atwell† Chris Hemsworth† Michael B. Jordan† Jeremy Renner† Michael Douglas† Tom Hiddleston† Karen Gillan† Sebastian Stanand Paul Rudd among other things. More tragically, it also marks the last appearance of Chadwick Boseman in the MCU.
Considering how extensive the multiverse it only makes sense that Disney+ and Marvel Studios are extending the show for another season. While not many details have been revealed about this new season, that doesn’t mean we can discuss it. Here’s everything we know about it so far What if…? Season 2.
When will what if…? Season 2 will be released?
When What if…? Season 2 was first announced on Disney+ Day on November 12, 2021, with no official release date announced other than the season coming “soon”. But executive producer Brad Winderbaum told Collider’s Steve Weintraub back in August 2021 that they hope to release a new season every year:
“As you know, animation takes a long time to produce. We were lucky enough to get the green light early enough for a second season to have the chance to release it next year. We’ll see what happens. Of course I don’t want to predict the future with this new world we live in, but our intention is to make it an annual release.”
The director of the show, Bryan Andrewsalso revealed to Weekly entertainment two months later, the episodes for season 2 have already been written, which is sure to help the team execute on their annual release plan.
Is there a what if…? Season 2 Trailer?
Marvel hasn’t released a trailer for What if…? Season 2, but we’ll update this page as it becomes available.
Who is in the cast of What If…? Season 2?
At this point, no one has been confirmed for the cast of What if…? Season 2, but it’s likely that the same actors who appeared in Season 2 will return. If this season tackles plot points from phase 4, many actors from Black Widow† Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Ringsand Eternals can also act on the show.
How many episodes will what if…? Season 2 Got?
Like the first season, What if…? Season 2 has nine episodes of approximately thirty minutes each.
When asked about the length of each episode, this is what Winderbaum had to say:
“We were aiming for ‘half an hour’ for each episode. Some come in a little longer, some come in a little shorter. And it was really all about manufacturable time. We wanted to tell as many stories as possible And we had a certain budget to work with work, so it felt like that ten episodes (now nine episodes) was the right amount.”
Winderbaum later explained that both seasons were originally going to be ten episodes each, but the COVID-19 pandemic caused the team to change those plans.
What about the Marvel Zombies? Spin off?
During its November 2021 Disney+ Day celebration, Marvel announced that a Marvel Zombies spin-off series is in development. Based on writer’s comic book metaseries Robert Kirkman and illustrator Sean Phillips† Marvel Zombies takes place in an alternate universe where many superheroes have turned into zombies. These comics were later adapted into a Season 1 episode of What if…?, “What if… Zombies?!” Not much is known about the spin-off at this point, other than being set in the same universe as “What If… Zombies?!”, Bryan Andrews will direct the show, and Robot Chicken author Zeb Wells will be its main writer. However, fans of What if…? are definitely in for a treat with this spin-off.
What’s what if…? Season 2 About?
Although not much is known about the plot of What if…? Season 2 right now, the show’s lead writer, AC Bradleygave EW some pointers on what to expect:
“As we go into Season 2, we’re sticking with the anthology form, and it’s going to be all-new stories, lots of fun, new heroes, and more out of Phase Four than we could clearly see this season. Hopefully, we’ll be able to see hints of it. Eternals and Shang-Chi and the Black Widow characters. The pleasure of What if…? is that we can explore the whole infinite multiverse, so we try to bounce around as much as possible. I want to play with all these characters, and as much as I love Captain Carter, we have to share the love. I’m very excited to show new worlds, new heroes.”
While this season ended with a to collaborate involving different characters from different universes, Bradley also explained to EW that season will focus less on “end of the world” stories and instead “a lot more focus on the character stories and let these heroes and a different side of them see those people don’t expect and hopefully they can relate to.”
Speaking of Captain Carter, Andrews recounted: Variety in October 2021 that it would be a “relatively safe bet” for her to return, which isn’t surprising considering the mid-credits scene in the season 1 season finale teased that we’d be seeing more of her.
One of the episodes will probably revolve around the Gamora we saw in the Season 1 Finale† Bradley explained why we didn’t see her again during Season 1:
“Basically, what happened was that earlier in the season we scheduled an episode that was a fun, light-hearted, living, breathing Tony Stark episode with Gamora. However, due to the COVID pandemic, one of our animation houses was hit incredibly hard. and the episode had to be pushed to season 2 because it wouldn’t be ready in time. Considering everything we’ve been through over the past two years, it’s absolutely nothing compared to an episode of television. And we got it. We hope so fans will enjoy the ride next year.”
On the other hand, anyone hoping for alternative versions of the live action Disney+ shows can be seriously disappointed. In that same interview with Varietyexplained Bradley:
“In Season 2, we’re doing a lot of the things that we’re doing in parallel with the Disney Plus live-action shows. We were already writing. So we might not get a chance to explore some of the things that showed in those shows, because we do them almost at the same time. [Marvel Studios chief] Kevin [Feige] was like, “No no no! Do not touch! Don’t touch that! Not yet!” Maybe one day, maybe, if these things continue, we can play with some of those things. But we can certainly play with some other parts of the MCU. There’s fertile ground.”
