Early life:

Yoko Ono was born on February 18, 1933 in Tokyo, Japan. Her ancestors are from the Yasuda clan, a samurai clan dating back to the Edo period. Because of their prowess in banking, the Yasuda clan is considered a “financial clan.” Her father’s family descends from a long line of samurai warriors.

Her father had moved to San Francisco for work at the time of Ono’s birth. Yoko Ono and the rest of her family followed when she was two years old. In 1934, her younger brother was born, and in 1937 the family returned to Japan. The following year, Ono began piano lessons and enrolled in Gakushuin, one of Japan’s most prestigious schools.

Yoko Ono and her family returned to the United States in 1940, but this time they stayed in New York for only a year before Ono’s father was assigned to Hanoi. Ono again enrolled in a prestigious school, but the Second World War interrupted her studies. Her family took refuge in a fortified bunker during the devastating fire bombing of Tokyo in 1945, and they were unharmed.

A period of extreme misery ensued for Ono’s family and everyone else in Tokyo. Yoko Ono and her mother had to beg for food and often exchanged things for rice. Her father was still in Hanoi at the time, while Yoko Ono later claimed that he was serving a sentence in a prisoner of war camp in French Indochina (present-day Vietnam).

The Gakushuin School reopened in 1946, when Japan had stabilized enough to return to some form of normalcy. Yoko Ono resumed her studies and was placed in the same class as the future monarch of Japan. After graduating in 1951, Ono studied philosophy at Gakuishuin University for two semesters.

She completed her studies at Sarah Lawrence College, where she developed a lifelong passion for art. It was during this time that Yoko Ono began to meet poets, artists and other people whom she found intriguing. Her parents, on the other hand, were against her association with these kinds of people.
