The former husband of Petra Ecclestone, the Formula One heiress, was involved in a £266 million money laundering operation run through a gold dealer, a court heard.

James Stunt, 40, is alleged to have received £46 million from the illicit scheme which laundered “street cash” from crimes including drug dealing by using it to buy gold.

The defendant bought millions of pounds worth of gold bars which were melted down into “untraceable, unidentifiable” gold grain, the court heard.

Stunt, 40, was married to Petra Ecclestone, 33, the daughter of the billionaire former Formula One boss Bernie Ecclestone, 91, from 2011 to 2017.

As a tube containing £250,000 of gold grain was passed around the jury at his trial at Cloth Hall court in Leeds yesterday,
