‘Jaws’ Musical ‘Bruce’ Hooks Steven Spielberg: Jarrod Spector – Deadline

The world premiere in Seattle of the jaws-inspired musical Bruce has landed its Steven Spielberg: Tony-nominated actor Jarrod Spector plays the young filmmaker circa 1974 as he takes on various challenges while directing what would become the most ferocious of all the summer blockbusters.

Not least of those challenges: the “highly dysfunctional mechanical star named Bruce,” as the musical’s synopsis puts it, referring to the robotic shark that made filming a nightmare.

Based on The Jaws Loga 1975 behind-the-scenes nonfiction of the film’s production by jaws co-screenwriter Carl Gottlieb, the musical, directed and choreographed by Donna Feore of Stratford Festival, begins previews at the Bagley Wright Theater in Seattle Rep. on May 27, with opening night June 8. The engagement runs until June 26.

“Check jaws the first time, I was so terrified of the water for years that I could barely set foot in a pool, let alone the ocean,” said Spector, who most recently starred on Broadway as Sonny Bono in The Cher Show and was Tony-nominated for his performance as Barry Mann in Beautiful: The Carole King Musical† “Now that I have joined the Bruce gang (and after reading The Jaws Logof course), I learned that making the film was just as harrowing as what the guys on the Orca had to endure.

“It’s a real honor to portray perhaps the most eminent genius in filmmaking,” he continued, “and I’m so excited to be working with Donna Feore and the whole Bruce team to help tell this story of the group of brilliant artists who faced every imaginable obstacle to somehow emerge with this genre-defying masterpiece. I just hope Mr. Spielberg doesn’t mind that his singing voice is very similar to mine.”

The musical’s full creative team was also announced today: in addition to the music by Richard Oberacker, the book and lyrics by Robert Taylor and Oberacker – the team behind the 2017 Broadway musical BandstandBruce will feature stage design by Jason Sherwood, costume design by Tina McCartney, lighting design by Jeff Croiter, sound design by Brian Hsieh, projection design by Shawn Duan, music direction by Lily Ling and orchestration/music accompaniment by Greg Anthony Rassen.

More casting information will be announced soon.

Originally, the musical was supposed to make its debut at Paper Mill Playhouse in New Jersey last year, but the Covid pandemic led to a change of plans.

The official summary: Bruce tells the story of a virtually unknown 26-year-old Steven Spielberg in 1974 while on his way to film an adaptation of a bestselling novel. While invading a sleepy fishing island off the coast of Cape Cod to shoot on the open ocean, he faced several challenges, including weather, water, hostile locals, an exploding budget, endless delays, and a highly dysfunctional mechanical star named Bruce, to bring his vision to life in what turned out to be one of the greatest success stories in cinema history.
