Jimmy Garoppolo trade rumours: 49ers given two second-round picks for veteran QB by report

The quarterback carousel this offseason has been a wild ride, but there are still players looking for new homes. Free agents like Jameis Winston and Marcus Mariota have yet to put pen to paper, and then there are a few other quarterbacks like Baker Mayfield and Jimmy Garoppolo waiting to be traded.

With Mayfield and Garoppolo already replaced, it’s curious what their teams could get in return for their services. According to Mike Florio of Pro Football Talk, John Lynch, general manager of the San Francisco 49ers, is telling interested teams that they have an offer of two second-round picks for Garoppolo on the table.

As for the team that made this reported offer, it is likely the Indianapolis Colts, New Orleans Saints or Carolina Panthers. The Seattle Seahawks are another team looking for a new quarterback, but the 49ers probably wouldn’t trade Garoppolo within the division.

Garoppolo is coming from shoulder surgery, but it is not something that has affected his trading market. He is 37-16 as a starter in his career, including playoff games, and helped the 49ers get to the Super Bowl doorstep for two of the last three years.

The Colts were a team reportedly in the mix for Garoppolo this month, but their plans may have changed now that Mayfield is available. One team to watch is the Panthers, who missed out on Deshaun Watson and have been in the market for a new quarterback for years. Carolina signed Teddy Bridgewater for the 2020 season before trading him to the Denver Broncos a year later. Then the Panthers traded three picks to the New York Jets for Sam Darnold. That also failed.

Garoppolo is entering the final year of the $137.5 million five-year deal he signed in 2018. His cap hit for 2022 is $26.95 million, per Spotrac.
