Man taken to hospital after serious accident at Southwest Calgary . intersection

One person has been taken to hospital in life-threatening condition and a busy intersection was closed Wednesday after a serious two-vehicle collision in southwest Calgary.

EMS was broadcast around 6:15 am after receiving reports of an accident at the intersection of Sarcee Trail and Richmond Road SW

A man in his 40s was taken by ambulance to Foothills Medical Center in a critical, life-threatening condition, EMS spokesman Helene Hamilton told CBC News.

Calgary police said the man was trapped in the vehicle.

Calgary Police initially tweeted that the entire intersection was closed, but said at 7:15 a.m. the Sarcee Trail had reopened northbound.

Southbound Sarcee Trail would remain closed on Richmond Road, police said, along with the east and west lanes of Richmond Road.

Staff Sgt. Darren Smith told CBC News at about 8:15 a.m. that drivers should be aware of delays and seek alternative routes if possible.

“Right now we are asking motorists to avoid the area as roads are closed and will be for the foreseeable future,” Smith said.
