Manchester United aims for Erik ten Hag’s surprising record against English teams

Erik ten Hag is Manchester United’s favorite manager candidate as they continue to look for a permanent successor to Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, although his record against English clubs is not particularly good.

His Ajax team faced Premier League opposition six times, but only once was Ten Hag on the winning side. The Dutch club became famous for a Champions League final meeting with Liverpool in 2019 when Tottenham made a stunning comeback in the semi-finals, while Mauricio Pochettino – who is also strongly linked to the track at Old Trafford – was in charge about the North Londoners.

After winning the first leg at Spurs thanks to an attack by Donny van de Beek, Lucas Moura stunned the Johan Cruijff Arena as he completed his hat-trick with almost the final kick of the draw to eliminate Ajax on away goals – this came after the hosts were 2-0 into the evening.

The following season they met Chelsea in the group stage of the Champions League and lost 1-0 in their home game. Fans who traveled to Stamford Bridge for the reverse witnessed another backlash from an English club, with Chelsea coming back from 4-1 behind and drawing 4-4 after two Ajax players were sent off.

Ten Hag continued his poor run against English teams with two 1-0 defeats to Liverpool in last season’s Champions League. Those results leave the Dutchman with a win rate of just under 17 percent against top English clubs.
