AUSTIN (KXAN) — A nationwide transition to zero-emission vehicles and electricity could save lives and money over the next 30 years, according to the report Zeroing in on Healthy Air.
The American Lung Association released the 2022 report and found “stunning results if we made this transition to zero-emission technologies. We could see more than a trillion dollars in public health benefits,” said Will Barrett, the national senior director of the American Lung Association. ALA for advocacy for clean air.
The report looked at state-level data to envision the scenario of a blanket move to zero emissions.
“We’re using engineering modeling tools based on these scenarios that we’ve developed to really tell the story of where we could go if we make strong policy choices, strong investments in cleaning the air in our community,” Barrett said.
The American Lung Association said the transportation sector is a major source of air pollution and the largest source of carbon pollution in the country.
“We’re looking at passenger cars, so the cars in the driveway, school buses taking kids to school, transit buses, all the way up to heavy trucks,” Barrett said.
The ALA said Texas could benefit the most.
“We see a number of states with a very large number of public health benefits, and Texas is at the top with more than 100 billion in health benefits to be achieved through this transition to zero-emission technology. That’s more than 9,000 lives saved, about 350,000 asthma attacks avoided, over the period from 2020 to 2050.”
Huge change by 2050 would require swift action and policy change, Barrett admitted.
“We need to see the political will and investment that has been made to bring clean air to the forefront much faster than what is now on track.”
