UNION, Ky. – One person killed, two others injured in a two-vehicle accident Sunday night on US-42 between Bleu Yacht Lane and Ransom Drive in Union, Kentucky.
The Boone County Sheriff’s Office identified the murdered man as Charles Smith, 46, of Union.
Investigators said a man driving a 2006 Dodge Durango was heading west on US-42 just past the intersection with Ransom Drive when he couldn’t make a turn and exited the road on the right. The man tried to correct the SUV back into the lane, but corrected too much and crossed the centerline into the wrong lane, a press release said. Investigators said the man then gave a 2011 Kia Forte a T-botte driven by Smith.
WCPO photojournalist Rob Pieper was at the crash site and saw the Durango about 20 feet (6 meters) high in someone’s yard.
The sheriff’s office said Union EMS tried to save Smith’s life but was unsuccessful. Smith was pronounced dead at the scene.
A teenage passenger in the back seat of Smith’s car suffered non-life-threatening injuries and was taken to Cincinnati Children’s Hospital, the release said.
The sheriff’s office said the driver of the Durango suffered minor injuries and was taken to the University of Cincinnati Medical Center.
Speed appears to have been a factor in the accident, police said. At this point, researchers said alcohol and drug disorders are unknown factors.
No charges have been filed at this time, the sheriff’s office said.
