Slovak Prime Minister Eduard Heger announced Friday that his country is sending a Soviet-era S-300 air defense system to Ukraine to “help save many innocent lives from the Putin regime’s aggression”.

Heger made the remark during a visit to Ukraine with Ursula von der Leyen, President of the Commission of the European Union and Josep Borrell, EU foreign policy chief.

“I can confirm that the Slovak Republic has donated an air defense system, the S-300, to Ukraine. I believe that this defense system will help save many innocent lives from the aggression of the Putin regime,” Heger said.

“However, the endowment of this system does not mean that Slovakia is part of the armed conflict,” he added. “And I would like to assure all citizens of the Slovak Republic that the protection of our territory is sufficiently secure and will be strengthened in the coming days by another system of our allies.”

The transfer of the military hardware is the first known case of a country giving such weapons to Ukraine since the start of the Russian invasion on Feb. 24, according to Reuters.

President Joe Biden said on Friday: “I would like to thank the Slovak government for providing Ukraine with an S-300 air defense system, something President Zelenskyy has personally brought up with me in our talks. To facilitate this transfer and ensure continued security of Slovakia, the United States will move an American Patriot missile system to Slovakia.”

“Now is not the time for complacency,” Biden added. “The Russian military may have failed in its goal of taking Kiev, but it continues to inflict horrific atrocities on the Ukrainian people.”

US Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin also said on Friday that the system provides Ukraine with a “critical defensive capability”.

“It is strong evidence of how determined Ukraine’s neighbors are to help Ukrainians defend themselves against Russia’s unprovoked invasion of their homeland,” he added.
