Ukraine has said it had killed another Russian general, adding to a growing list of Vladimir Putin commanders who have been killed, according to Western officials since the invasion began.
The reported blow to the Russian armed forces comes as Putin’s two top officials who oversaw Putin’s war appeared in public after speculation as to why they had not been seen for two weeks.
Oleksiy Arestovich, adviser to the head of the president’s cabinet, said in a video address that Lieutenant General Yakov Rezantsev, the commander of Russia’s 49th Combined Army, was killed in an attack near the southern city of Kherson – the first city occupied by Russia in the war.
Ukrainian media reported that the general was killed at Chornobaivka Air Force Base, which Russia uses as a command post. Another lieutenant general, Andrei Mordvichev, was also reportedly killed at the same base.
Ukraine’s Defense Ministry tweeted Friday: “Yakov Rezantsev is the second Russian lieutenant general to be killed in the war against Ukraine.
“Georgian Abkhazia torn apart, Syria bombed and ultimately inglorious elimination in Ukraine. This will be a typical track record of Russian generals,” it added.
According to the website of the Russian Ministry of Defense, Rezantsev held positions of platoon commander and army commander and had received a number of state awards, including the Order of Merit for the Fatherland.
news week has contacted the Russian Defense Ministry for comment. Moscow has not commented on the alleged murder in line with most of its commanders’ reported deaths.
Russia has only confirmed the death of one general, although Kiev and Western officials believe up to seven have been killed since the start of the war.
A source within the Ukrainian presidential government told the Wall Street Journal that Kiev had a military intelligence team dedicated to the Russian officers as their demise gives them a major public relations coup.
Meanwhile, Russian Defense Minister Sergei Shoigu and Chief of General Staff Valery Gerasimov spoke in a video for the first time in more than two weeks, amid speculation about their whereabouts.
After not being seen in public since March 11, amid reports of health problems, he reappeared, albeit briefly, when the Russian state news agency RIA Novosti published a video online of Putin speaking to his advisers, citing Shoigu appeared on a screen in the top corner. The Russian news agency said the meeting had taken place on Thursday.
The Defense Department released a clip of him on Saturday, this time targeting senior generals. There was nothing in the video to clarify when it was filmed.
Reading from a script, Shoigu spoke about the supply of weapons to troops in Ukraine.
