The long-established Anchor Bar in Detroit is under new management.

After changing hands several years ago, Detroit’s iconic Anchor Bar is still updating its menu. The much-loved bar announced it will reopen next month with some new dishes – following similar announcements in 2019 and 2021.

After closing several months earlier this year, Anchor Bar will reopen on Tuesday, April 5 with its new menu. On Friday, April 8, the bar will also host a “Tigers Opening Day Non-Tailgate” party from 11am. with drink specials running all month long.

New items, according to the bar, include a fried chicken sandwich and baked mac and cheese. Those items tie in with old favorites like the Anchor Classic Chop Salad, Garbage Can Nachos, Chili and Cheese Whiz Totchos, Truffle Fries, and wings.

“The Anchor Bar has been a fixture in downtown Detroit’s food scene for more than six decades, and we look forward to reopening and welcoming our guests,” said Stephanie Prechel, general manager of the bar’s hospitality group, the Iconic Collection, in a statement. “The Anchor Bar is the perfect place for people to come together and experience engaging, inspiring and genuine connections, delicious food and drink and personalized service.”

The bar has been a favorite watering hole for sports fans and journalists alike over the years, thanks to its proximity to the former Joe Louis Arena and the offices of the Detroit News and free press† The Derderian family, who ran the bar for decades, announced that they would sell the business in 2018.

It was later acquired by The Iconic Group, which also runs the chic Parc in downtown Detroit, as well as 220 Merrill and the Rose Room in Birmingham.

Anchor Bar reopened in 2019 with a modified menu and reopened in 2021 with further changes to the menu, following a forced closure due to the COVID-19 pandemic. The bar then closed abruptly in January, prior to the last menu change.

Anchor Bar’s hours of operation are 11am-9pm Monday through Wednesday, 11am-11pm Thursday through Saturday, and 11am-9pm on Sundays. It is located at 450 W. Fort St., Detroit. More information is available at anchorbardetroit.com.
