UPDATE, March 30:
The Newmarket man, missing since Friday, has been found dead, the York Regional Police Department said.
Officers searching for the man found his body on Tuesday, March 29 at approximately 4 p.m. in the Newmarket Canal off Bayview Parkway.
The identity of the man found turned out to be 37-year-old Cher Hao Wong, who was last seen by his family on Friday, March 25.
The cause of death is not considered suspicious, according to police.
A search and rescue team from York Regional Police searched Newmarket’s rail system and waterways looking for a man who has been missing since Friday.
Cher Hao Wong, 37, was last seen by his family when he left their Bristol Road home at 5.30pm on March 25. He was seen near Main and Timothy Street at 9:45 p.m. later that same evening. He has not been seen since.
Police yesterday searched the Main and Davis Drive area, as well as the wooded areas to the north.
“The community can expect a police presence during the search. Landowners in the area are being asked to check their property,” said a Twitter post.
“There were concerns and as a result, the investigators brought in a search and rescue team and a command post was established in the area,” Const said. said Maniva Armstrong.
The command post was located near the tannery at 465 Davis Dr. and the search included the trail area, forest area and waterways, Armstrong said, but she couldn’t confirm whether Fairy Lake was included.
She said these types of search and rescue are not standard for all missing persons cases unless they have received a tip or other information that warrants it.
“Through information they found out that the missing person had been in that area,” she said.
There is no further update from researchers at this time.
Wong — aka Charles — is originally from Singapore and has been in Canada for six months. He is familiar with the Newmarket area and public transport, police said.
He is described as a South Asian man, 5 fairy 7 inches tall, weighing about 160 pounds. He has short black hair and brown eyes and was clean-shaven. He was last seen wearing a dark blue winter coat, brown boots, black pants, a blue long-sleeved shirt and prescription glasses.
