Investigators from the Vancouver Island Integrated Major Crime Unit (VIIMCU) investigate the sudden death of a child.
In a statement, Victoria Police said officers were called to Victoria General Hospital just before 9 p.m. PT on Thursday evening.
They say BC Emergency Health Services paramedics initially responded to a call for help near the streets of Vancouver and Johnson just after 7 p.m. PT, transporting the child and a parent to the hospital.
Police say VicPD officers had responded to a welfare call involving the parent and child near Johnson and Quadra streets the day before.
VicPD has notified the Independent Investigations Office (IIO) that an investigation has begun to determine what role, if any, police action or inaction may have played in the death, according to the statement.
According to the police, the investigation is in its early stages and ongoing.
They are asking anyone with information about the incident who has not yet spoken to investigators to call the VicPD Report Desk at (250) 995-7654 extension 1.
