As she prepares to host the 94th Academy Awards on Sunday night with Amy Schumer and Regina Hall, Wanda Sykes recently recalled shaking the mic at the 2009 White House correspondents dinner.

“I just got thrown into the fire,” Sykes told PEOPLE of that night. “I had no idea how many people would be in that room.”

“At the Correspondents’ dinner, I silenced the First Lady,” the comedienne continued. “Michelle Obama was sitting right next to me, and I’m working on my material, my jokes, and I’m focused on preparation, and she’s trying to have a conversation. And I gave her a look like, ‘Woman, I work here! What are you doing? Pipe down.’”

With the pressure of that night in mind, Sykes laughed and said“I think I’ll be good in this role,” when she talks about her performance at this year’s Oscars.

The Most Outstanding Academy Award 2022 nominations include numerous winks at King Richard in different categories, Questlove’s Summer of the soul in the category Documentary and Coming 2 America in the Make-up and Hairstyling category.

King Richard star Will Smith gave a tearful speech in February when he received a SAG Male Actor Award in a Leading Role category.

“That was perhaps one of the best moments of my career so far,” the actor said candidly. “Because My Name Was Called” King Richard sitting next to Venus Williams.”

The film reveals the determination and passion Richard Williams had when he trained two of his young black daughters, Venus and Serena Williams, to later become titans at their white-dominated sport, tennis.

Smith’s nomination at the Academy Awards next Sunday in the Best Actor category marks the actor’s first Oscar nomination in 15 years. His competition includes Javier Bardem (Being the Ricardos), Benedict Cumberbatch (The Power of the Dog), Andrew Garfield (tick, tick… BOOM!) and Denzel Washington (The Tragedy of Macbeth).

The Oscars for 2022 will take place at the Dolby Theater in Hollywood and will air on ABC on Sunday at 8 p.m.
